So, Jules. I had… forgotten about it if I’m honest, even though it was one of the first coding agents I’ve used. That was because it had a very generous free allocation - a trend with Google Gemini models back then, with an extremely generous Google AI Studio free tier quota (albeit with a training clause), a nearly ludicrous sounding Gemini CLI quota, and Jules quotas on top of all that.

Nowadays Google tightened up their spend quite a bit. AI studio via API is now heavily restricted (especially as PAYG billing enabling got easier, and didn’t involve digging into Vertex AI proper anymore), and Gemini CLI, the open source version, is no more. Still, they haven’t stopped giving away tokens if you know where to look, apparently.

Jules is Google’s web based coding agent. They actually did it first, even before Claude Code for the web or Codex Web, if I recall correctly. And it currently offers 15 free runs per day. Yes, runs - the thing that made GitHub Copilot collapse and switch to usage based billing. We will need to see how that pans out, though the free model is Gemini 3.6 Flash at the time of writing, which genuinely is a cheaper model. They also use TPUs internally, so it might really just be consumer acquisition cost for them. Or it might end up in the Google Graveyard. I hope it doesn’t, competition is always good.
